ARTUR!4 Bielefeld Gallery hopping night

Friday October 11 19:00 – 24:00

7 galleries are participating and the evening of events can be found here

There has quite a bit of discussion this year as to whether Bielefeld is a city that supports culture. Neue Westfälische held a series of lunch conversations in the Sou Fujimotos wood house outside the Kunsthalle to discuss the topic. They make interesting reading.

We HEART Bielefeld

For our Trailing Spouses Art Collective, we each created our own personal advertisement for what we liked best about living in Bielefeld. The theme could also be interpreted in an ironic or playful way. As the idea was to cheer us up in these gloomy winter months and be as positive as possible about our adopted city. So the more over the top the better! Here are a few of our ‘ads’.

Cheryl designed these book marks inspired by the recent snow, thunder and hail storm last week.

Piia is in love with the new Stadtbahn and made this picture inspired by a Finnish artist from her home country (Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s BIL aktie BOL poster advertising an automobile retailer in the 1907.)

Patty’s entertaining ad took inspiration from Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom brochure.

Open Studios this weekend!

The yearly artists’ open studios event takes place this weekend. For those new to the open studios weekend, this is how it works: You buy an open studios booklet for 2 euro at the Bürgerwache, Kunsthalle, Tourist Info office, etc. The booklet lists all the artists with examples of their work, along with a map so you know where to find them. You pick the artists you want to see and go visit their studios.

Easy and fun! The event is this Saturday (September 1st) from 14-19h, and Sunday from 11-19h.

See this link for more information, including other places where you can buy the booklet:  http://www.offeneateliers-bielefeld.de/

A couple of weekends ago, we got to enjoy Nachtansichten in Bielefeld (a.k.a. Museum Night). For about 8 euros each, you can gain entry to all of the city’s museums, galleries and churches. We went to see the Historiches Museum, the Kunsthalle, and the Bauernhof Museum. It was a beautiful night, one of the first comfortably warm summer nights of the year, and it was incredible to see how many people Bielefeld actually has. Highlights: seeing massive weaving machines; learning about the microphotographer/artist Carl Strüwe.

Classes for kids and adults

My son loved his toddler gym class at the Hedwig Dornbusch Schule. They have a great selection of kids classes from art, movement to music. They are very affordable so places fill up fast. They also have a good selection of adult classes too.

For adults the Volkshochschule has a lot of affordable classes too, including learning german http://www.vhs-bielefeld.de
