english speaking doctors and other languages

I have added this to our doctor’s / dentists etc page but here is useful brochure which lists doctors and specialists in Bielefeld who also speak other languages including English, French, Turkish, Russian, Polish etc. It’s a few years out of date but might be a good starting point.

Bielefeld celebrates 800th anniversary

I have missed most of Bielefeld’s 800 year anniversary celebrations but there are still plenty of events and exhibitions happening for the rest of the year all over town. Some really interesting things happening so check it out. You can also pick up a brochure of all the events and find out more at the tourist office.

Online supermarket delivery

Coming from the UK, I love doing my supermarket shopping online (offered by all the big British supermarkets). So I’m very excited to see Rewe is offering online shopping and delivery here in Bielefeld for orders over 40 euros. The prices are same as in the store, and the online selection has just about everything I usually buy. The first three deliveries are free and after that’s it’s between 2 – 7 euros depending on delivery time. At the moment though all delivery slots are only 1 euro. They offer two hour slots to choose from and delivery up to 9 pm in the evening and also on Saturdays. Stairs are no problem. You change and add things to your order until the day before.  I look forward to trying this out and having my shopping appear in my kitchen! I will report back soon.

UPDATE: My order was easy to complete on-line and turned up on time. Frozen goods were still frozen too. I will definately continue to use them for my weekly shop.

The Deutsche Post office is surprisingly good at forwarding mail if you are planning to be away from home for an extended period of time. We have had it forwarded around Europe and even to Japan and Canada. And amazing it has worked! Costs €20 for up to six months or €25 for 12 months and you can set up several addresses if you’ll be moving around. You can fill out a form online and they even called my husband to clarify the addresses.

Spring Concerts

Bielefeld has a lot to offer if you like to listen to concerts – a lot of them are even free:
5.4. (Saturday) 12.05 If you fancy a little break from your Saturday shopping, there is (pipe) organ music of Bach, Buxtehude and others at the Altstädter Nicolaikirche (near Alter Markt / coffee store). For a list of music at various churches in Bielefeld, have a look into the “Kirchenmusik in Bielefeld” brochure (which is publlished every 3 months, I usually take it from the Stadtbibliothek) or click on “Veranstaltungskalender” here
6.4. (Sunday) The Bielefelder Philharmoniker play several family concerts at the Assapheum in Bethel, starting at 3 p.m. You can buy cake and coffee there as well. The last one of the current season is in April:
13.4. (Sunday) from 7.30 p.m. The Forum Bielefeld   celebrates it’s 40th birtday with an indoor festival and four bands: THE GRAVELTONES (Wales/GB) SODA FABRIC (Tel Aviv- Israel), THE 1840s (Israel) and BUFFALO SUMMER (GB)19.4. (Saturday) You can expect all kinds of surprises at Murphy’s Karaoke night at the Heimat & Hafen pub on Stapenhorststrasse

Five of the April concerts at Bunker Ulmenwall   are free for anyone under 18, two of the “Dienstag unten” concerts are free for all:
22.4. (Tuesday) B.E.D
29.4. Laksa (a quartet from Bielefeld)
28.4. (Monday) 8 p.m. University Audimax (on the left side of the main building): Kammerkonzert (chamber concert) of the university orchestra, they will play J.S. Bach. They even fixed the dates for the 2016 spring concerts 😉
19.5. (Monday) 8 p.m. Schwanengesang (Schubert songs) at the Audimax of the University
Thanks PollyEster for all the great concert info!

Osnabrück Zoo

Osnabrück Zoo is a great day out with kids. It’s about 45 mins drive from Bielefeld and a brilliant zoo with giraffes, lions, elephants, monkeys etc all split into different geographical zones. There are several good playgrounds too for both little kids and older ones. It gets crowded on weekends so go early. We spent several hours there and still didn’t manage to see everything. There is a winter discount at the moment until end of March.

Next time we hope to check out the ‘all weather’ Münster Zoo (English website), they have covered walkways and you get to feed the elephants and other animals! Plus they take the penguins out walking.
