Starting this Thursday April 2nd will be a new weekly evening market at Klosterplatz from 16:00 to 20:00 with local produce, bread, flowers and a beer garden. Should be a nice place to meet after work once the weather warms up.

Cafe Kunstwerk

We visited the new Café Kunstwerk above Café Knigge on Obernstraße in the Altstadt. It has an interesting shabby chic villa meets art deco style. There are good views from the big window across to the church opposite. They do cakes, smoothies and light dishes.  A cozy spot in the center of town to relax.

Eiscafe Los Andes

I recently spent a rainy Sunday afternoon at the Chilean Eiscafe Los Andes on Dornberger Strasse 274 (in the Jibi shopping center past Tierpark Olderdissen). It’s a lovely cozy place and they have delicious empanadas and Chilean style panini sandwiches, plus very tasty lemon cake. They also offer breakfast and other savoury dishes. My sons loved their chocolate ice cream waffles!

New Siegfriedplatz cafe & wine bar

One of the fun things having been away from Bielefeld for six months, is discovering all the new places that have opened while I was gone. I saw this cute new cafe & wine bar on the corner of Siegfriedplatz this evening – Heinrich sein Enkel. They specialise in natural wines (there’s also a wine store) along with simple homemade light dishes such quiche, cheese and baked goods. Everything looked delicious and the place had a nice atmosphere. I will definately be visiting for a glass of wine and dessert soon.

You can see photos and a review in German here and here.

Feuerzangenbowle

Today marks the start of the Christmas season for us here in Finland. A bit of decorating, cookies, and mostly Christmas music and Glögi ( a type of  Glühwein Nordic style). All this got me thinking about Bielefeld and the great German Christmas markets.

What I love about the Christmas markets in Germany is that everybody goes, every evening, by the looks of it. Christmas market is not only a place to  purchase  presents and crafts, but a place to meet up with friends. And drink and eat. It is so easy to eat out as there is lots of choice and it’s fairly cheap as well.

We had three Christmases in Bielefeld and had a bit of a tradition budding. A night at the market with the kids and friends, meeting place ‘the talking elk’s head’ near the church at the Altstadt. Be warned, the place is FULL!

On the drinks front my favourite is the  very sweet and strong Feuerzangenbowle which is made of rum-soaked sugar-loaf  and mulled wine. It’s just the best thing in a really freezing winter night, bearing in mind that it is strong! And sweet. Well worth the try though.

I also visited the Berlin Christmas markets one year with my sister. That was great, as we navigated through Berlin following various markets refueling in each of them 🙂 Curiously I don’t remember feeling cold once on that trip although it was very tough winter in Germany apparently.

Day trip

Gräflicher Park, just beyond Paderborn, is a nice place for a day trip and to enjoy the autumn leaves.  The schloss is a spa hotel so not open to the general public, but for $5 euros you can walk around the park and admire the old buildings (the 5 euros includes $2.50 off your bill in the cafe).  The park is lovely and with pretty gardens around the back.  My kids enjoyed playing the with the giant chess set and there is a beautiful water sculpture.

There is a cafe for tea and cake, also a restaurant in the old stables which has good food although you may to wait awhile for it to arrive…
