For those interested in creative crafts there is a big handmade fair going on at the Stadthalle this weekend. There are 130 exhibitors and several workshops. Entrance is 6 euros or 5 if booked in advance. Sat 10 – 18 and Sun 10 – 17

Also several people have told me about the University’s theatre festival – 6 workshops, 13 performances and 13 theatre-couch-talks  taking place in the University’s main building today and tomorrow. For more information see here for the programme.

Events around town this weekend

PollyEster, our local Bielefelder, gave us the following tips for this weekend –
The FH Gestaltung/school of design at Lampingstrasse 3 is presenting the works of this semester’s graduates in photography, advertising and fashion design on Friday from 6 p.m. It will be open Saturday (11 a.m. – 6 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m. – 5 p.m.), too. To get to the exhibition, take tram line 4 up to Oetkerhalle. The opening on Friday is followed by a party at Nr. zu Platz, a small venue for concerts, parties and ping-pong (on Thursday nights) next to the Recyclingbörse and Cutie cafe (near the train station.)
On sunday morning, it is worth to take a trip to Bielefeld’s north to the shores of Obersee to join the traditional “Eiswette” – a bet to see wheter it is possible to cross the lake on ice or not. There weill be pea soup, Glühwein, fried sausages, stuff for kids and music and if you have a penguin costume it is an excellent opportunity to wear it. This is what it looked like in 2012 and here
Transition town Bielefeld organised a swap cafe at the IBZ on Teutoburger Straße 106 two weeks ago like  the one that took place at the sadly closed Eisbar in Altstadt.  They also have a repair cafe this sunday  from 2-5 p.m. If you have small (electrical) items that need fixing or want help with repairing clothes, this is the place – there will be coffee and cake, too. To get there, take a bus till stop “Volkshochschule”, not far from Real supermarket and Wäschereifabrik museum or tram line 3 up to “August-Schröder-Strasse”.

Osnabrück is nice for a day trip, about an hour away by train or car. If you go by train, getting off at the Osnabrück Altstadt stop is more convenient than the main station. Barösta cafe in Redlinger Strasse is a beautiful stop for a coffee break (just as Cafe-Konditorei Läer in Krahnstrasse).  This Sunday, there is free admission at the Felix Nußbaum Museum  (from 10 am. to 6 p.m.): I have not personally visited but it looks well worth a visit – Painter Felix Nussbaum, born in Osnabrück in 1904 and murdered at Auschwitz in 1944, recorded the experiences of the decades following the First World War in his paintings and reflected upon them as part of his own situation, which the artist, as a Jew, was pushed into by the racist ideology of national-socialist Germany.
For a general look at the city there’s a guided tour in English every Monday at 7 p.m. starting from the town hall.
Thanks PollyEster for the tips!

A call for participants  for a new theatre group below. Thanks Despina and good luck with your project!

Hi all! I would like to let you know about a new theatre project that just started in Bielefeld University and might be of interest to your network:

Experimental Theatre Studio is a contemporary theatre group with a focus on creating original work. The participants receive actor’s training in English and they play in original experimental theatre productions.

Currently, we are looking for people for our new production “Short Stories, Big City” which will be performed as part of the University Theatre Festival in January 2014. If you are interested, feel free to drop by in one of our meetings. Next meeting: Wednesday, 23.10.2013 at 16.00 in Room CO2-235. We would be happy to welcome new members!

ARTUR!4 Bielefeld Gallery hopping night

Friday October 11 19:00 – 24:00

7 galleries are participating and the evening of events can be found here

There has quite a bit of discussion this year as to whether Bielefeld is a city that supports culture. Neue Westfälische held a series of lunch conversations in the Sou Fujimotos wood house outside the Kunsthalle to discuss the topic. They make interesting reading.
